Again, he’s dealing with a franchise that has a fanbase. People are going to have various opinions on how things look. If you put your work out there and expect not to get any feedback that’s pretty unrealistic.

Otherwise he should only have been sharing the final products for us a o decide if we want to purchase or not.
I can’t dispute that…but I can bemoan this as another example of how (at the risk of sounding like the old man telling the kids to get off his lawn) the internet has done so much to erode general civility, decency, and common courtesy.
Just because it CAN be expected, doesn’t make it right.
If he walked up to anyone in person and showed his work I guarantee you the criticism would be miraculously muted.

About a month and a half wait after Picard S3 ends.

Wonder when we’ll start to see some SNW teases from Exo-6.

But is a creator sharing their creation with a group that he or she imagined would be interested in the creation truly an invitation to receive criticism?
If someone requests criticism and then freaks out when they don’t like what they hear, then maybe they are being unreasonable…if someone simply shows their work and others offer unsolicited criticism then they are being obnoxious.
If my wife slaves away all day cooking Thanksgiving dinner and I invite you over to eat it and as soon as you are finished you start complaining about how dry the Turkey was, I’m asking you to leave…some here would say that if my wife doesn’t want her cooking criticized then we shouldn’t have invited you over for dinner…I would dispute that, however.

I do understand what you mean, in regards to an artist simply sharing his art and possibly receiving unwelcome criticism but in this case, his "creation" is a product that is purchased by a group "because" they are interested in the creation and thus, feel the freedom to discuss not only the items that are well done but also the possible shortcomings, as well. The group definitely appreciates the products being offered for purchase and the criticism shared (at least in this forum) have been rather mild and more of feedback in nature. I can't speak to what is being posted on social media, though.

Please excuse the following rather long run-on sentence...

On the other hand, and further using your wife's cooking as the example, if during the Thanksgiving meal, your wife continuously is telling the guests that they are unappreciative, that they are insulting her children and not telling her how amazing the meal is, even while they are truly enjoying the meal, it may be that the guests would possibly discuss the events of that rather strange Thanksgiving dinner afterwards, especially when your wife charged the guests for the meal...

This is an open forum, and not nanjin's preserve to boost his ego. That's what his personal Facebook is for.

As a business the rules dictate that he can't post here without paying for the privilege of self-promotion.

Even if he did it's still an open forum for discussion. He wouldn't be buying the rights to absolute loyalty or praise, or banning constructive criticism. He would merely have the option to ignore anything or anyone he didn't agree with.

He made it plain when he stormed off last August that the forum isn't for him, because it doesn't guarantee absolute praise without constructive criticism. It only aims to provide a platform for civil discussion.

Honestly - regardless of where ANYONE sits regarding "this" part of the conversation here . . . THIS post nails it.

It doesn't mean we have an excuse to be rude - because THAT would break forum rules too - but then the majority of us here haven't been, and wouldn't go that route.

Again, I have always wished Nanjin & his team the very best, but just because someone is great at building a company/workforce, and deliver AMAZING quality product, it doesn't mean they are the right choice to act in a social media capacity.

We can't be awesome at everything - well - except my Wife (and I would never disagree with her because she IS awesome with that left hook).

Back when Playmates had the license, before the internet was in everyone's head 24/7, you either found stuff on the shelf, or you didn't. No one sat around debating the accuracy of Odo's forehead months before release. No one had access to sculptors annoying the heck out of them and making them second guess every line they put into clay. You either decided "I find these aimed more for kids" or you went the "gotta catch em all" route. When you saw them in store. In person. Deciding right then, is this worth the money they are asking? Its become overly ridiculous the things that people complain about. I'm not stating Nanjiin is perfect, and everything is golden. I only bought a 1/6 Spock from the QMX days, so I am hardly a cheerleader. I just popped in over here to see if any others had been made that I might like.

People expecting him to "do what I say or I won't buy your product" need to find something else to do.

I mean regarding the Playmates stuff while I get what you’re saying it’s not a great comparison. That was just a different time all together.

The fact is social media/forums exist now and are an outlet for people to comment. Nanjin makes his work available and that’s going to open up discussion.

Plus obviously it’s a lot different buying a figure that was probably under $10 back in the day to paying around $200 a piece for the sixth scale releases.

Also I don’t think many people ever necessarily said do this to x product or else. More often it was suggesting some minor changes or questioning certain decisions and he would take those types of comments the wrong way.

Perfectly well said. People who fall on the opposite side of the fence to this point of view have clearly not dealt with IP products or created anything artistic, can only see it through a narrow lens, and that's why they can only come up with non-comparable examples that don't make sense. I've been forced to put a couple on mute to filter out the noise.

People say he left, but he didn't. He used alt accounts. Probably still does.

Lest we not forget that Nanjin asked us all for a lot of help in the early days, mainly on other forums, but advise none-the-less. Now that's all forgotten and he only has 'one mentor he listens to' and 'If you don't like it, move on, this isn't for you'. Terrible attitude.

Like it or not, fans who love the franchise and have watched the shows hundreds of times ARE experts. They are the people who will buy his products. If he can't respect them, he's making a mistake, IMO.

Personally, I hope he stops with all the nonsense and gets back to interesting figure updates. The 'kool-aid' comment has really affected him, and every other post now mentions it. It's boring. We get it, you're hurt. He misunderstood the point completely, and it went way over his head. Drop it and move on.

Lol. Isn’t that the truth. I think my wife took some lessons from yours or vice verse. Here’s to completely awesome wives . . . and to platforms of civil discourse!

What is the 10 Forward Club? Is that where all the Facebook suck-ups congregate?

Interesting plan. Can't get unquestioned loyalty, try to buy it. :ROFLMAO:

And someone please share the Kool-Aid comment for context. I need to see that.

...People expecting him to "do what I say or I won't buy your product" need to find something else to do.

Can you please find one post in this forum where someone said the above?

I can certainly understand if someone said something to the effect of, "... I don't think that the sculpt captures (insert character's name) enough for me to spend the money on the figure..." I think we've all have had to make a similar decision and possibly posted numerous times the same, in regards to other manufacturers' figures, as well.

This is also well said. First, he asked for input, knowing we as fans would be the ones purchasing his products. Then, it seems he went on an ego trip; the classic "I've made it now. I no longer need you, peasant." trope.

There have been several other manufacturers who have shown prototypes of upcoming products. Some have changed said product according to the feedback they received, others haven't. But most have received that feedback, whether it be positive or negative, and not engaged in the petty insults and obsessive use of terms such as "kool-aid" and "constructive criticism" as if using the same terms as his ego's perceived enemies is a way of defeating them. It sounds as if that ego is a little fragile. People like that often put on an air of arrogance and self-bragging to cover they are scared [wit]less inside.

Simply put: If you are indeed a fan as you claim to be, if you want your fellow fans to be excited about your products and buy them, then just show the damn previews without feeling the need to engage anyone posting feedback, approving or disapproving. Period. You are creating these to sell to other fans, not for your private collection. There will be differences of opinion. No matter how passionate you may feel about the IP and your products, any suggestions for changes are in the spirit of improving the product for everyone concerned, not a negative reflection on you. Do not take it personally. Let it go. Move on. Drop it. You can not disrespect people then expect those same people to hand over money for the privilege.

I know my excitement for this line has dimmed considerably, and over the passed few weeks, I've been been grappling with the choice of whether or not to continue buying these figures. Problem is, I love Star Trek and I love these characters (well, not all of them :). The idea behind these one- sixth figures is a dream come true. The drama makes it a bad dream. I've been buying vintage Playmates as well as the new products and the Super 7 Reaction figures. That stuff makes me smile and feel happy and relaxed as a hobby should. I keep reading somewhere, "If our figures do not bring a smile to your face then move on. These figures are not for you." Well then, maybe I should take my money and move on.

In other words his ego has taken a bashing and the only way he can respond is to be nasty and condescending. Says it all, really.

In the industry I work in, criticism is a constant barrage with thousands, if not millions of opinions. It's a torrent and can be very overwhelming. However, the most successful and talented people I know can filter out the ultra-bad, and the ultra-good, and come to a middle ground, taking onboard constructive criticism with humility and grace.

Yeah, I was wondering when someone was going to bring up his special "10 Forward"- invitation only-may have figures not available to the general public-group. There are terms I'm sure we are not supposed to use on this board, but that new group should be called "Nanjin's Posterior Kissers Only" group. I hope I don't get in trouble for typing that. 🙂🙏🖖 The announcement of that group nearly sealed the deal for me. Someone has forgotten how open and welcoming Star Trek is at its core. How childish.

Every time something comes up, people start bashing the forum and say it's gone downhill. They've said that every year for many years, way before I even joined. When in fact, with the change in admin came the removal of many toxic members and they continue to do so. The forum is quiet now because a lot of the spiteful drama idiots have been removed. Saying the forum has gone downhill is Nanjin-defenders' go-to argument/defence. Pathetic.

He could easily make his FB profile private for him and his friends, but he likes the attention.
