Oh boy... a shame having such a brilliant base to work from and so much talent.
IMHO of course, there's probably a lot of people who love these more fanciful interpretations, but then again, when it comes to Giger's alien, I'm a purist. :lol

I'm a huge fan of the honeycomb!

Aaaah! That black stripe again! Why? Is it really so hard? The dome should in the first place not be so crystal clear and see through. It has to be smoked or made foggy. It has to be ugly to look beautiful.

I always thought the dome fogging up wasn't ever intended. In essence Giger wanted us to see the skeleton underneath. The brilliance for the Xenomorph is that it can always be reinterpreted and built upon. I think that repaint is amazing I might even consider mine getting done up.

It's such a shame that the upper photo doesn't exist in higher resolution, as it gives a very clear look at the suit and its paint apps in daylight.
Could be a Polaroid and therefor never in high resolution and lost in time and space. The shots with Giger are done in studio environment and I would kill for the negatives.

Found a site with some BTS pics that I hadn't seen before:

I don't remember ever seeing this picture, or that pattern on the dome:

Here's another one where the pattern seems to be as well:

And also on this one, although it might also just be the lights. What's more interesting is the sculpted interior of the facehugger, and the damage on the front of the dome.

One for fans of the clear dome:

And, if I'm not mistaken, the only pic where the front of the dome seems to be painted black:
(for some reason, it won't let me download the image, so here's the link)

And finally, a link to a great interview with Weaver from 1984. Very interesting to read her opinion way back then, unclouded by nostalgia or the ginormous success of Aliens and the development of the franchise:

Personally, I don't care for that repaint at all, some aspects, yes, but overall no. And I know he's super talented so that may be where some of my disappointment is coming from.
There were just too many paint versions of the dome to say it looked like that, or it looked like that. They used different ones for different scenes, some are just prepro and never made it to film, some have been heavily touched up by other painters during filming. Even the general color of the suits changed during filming from all of the KY, wear and tear, paint touchups, etc. They started out much lighter in tones vs what you see in the famous post production photos.

Other than the honeycomb effect, which I've never quite understood the reason behind, that repaint looks really good imo. lots of artistic license, but i guess it's his to do as he pleases, it does look nice aesthetically.

I prefer it plain black, like Queen did it. The other one is too stylized, like some of Chase Smith’s Big Chap repaints. Although his Dog is perfect.

XM used that dome design that never made it to the film as inspiration for the new Hive Alien piece they just released in brown and black versions.
