Todd McFarlane. Other toy companies followed suit.
IDK. McFarlane always seemed a cake walk (at least early on) compared to limited editions. All you really ever had to worry about with him was Variants. There was always a regular version you could enjoy but still chase after the Variants if you wanted. Sideshow / Hot Toys / Mezco, etc there frequently is ONLY one version. Nanjin is just one in the lot. Product quality is top notch but the rest...so tired of the chase.

Saavik from the novelisation would totally have joined the traitors. She had anger management issues. I do agree that it would not have been appropriate for Saavik to play out the way Valeris did (murdering the co-conspirators might need a tweak as I think Saavik should have been given a more redemptive arc) and I think Kirk appealing to her shared love for David rather than a forced mind meld would have been more fitting. I was disappointed that we didn't get to see either Alley or Curtis again.
Curious- which novels are you referring to?

It is his recent “logistical” statements re: Kolinar Spock that sets that anxiety in motion. The thing sells out during the 45 minutes that I’m on the road or in a dental chair I will be quite sad. I would hope I could catch up with Sideshow or Cotswold but that may not be easy either.
I hear ya! "Less than twenty-four hours notice" and expecting Spock to sell out in half the time Kirk did because he's "Spock!" does raise the anxiety levels. Like you, I'd hate to look at my phone and find out it's all over and done with and Spock (or other wanted character) is gone.
Honestly I sometimes curse the day some brilliantly evil mind, likely at Sideshow, came up with the idea of manufactured limited editions and FOMO driven advertising. It works sure. But it's no way to have a "relaxing" hobby that takes your mind off your troubles. Really puts the FU in fundamental pleasures. 😄😬🤨🤐🙃
Honestly, I'm having flashbacks to the Playmates days and how hard to find some of that stuff was, even before the exclusives. With the 1701s, at least all it took was a head swap and some paint and you could make your own. Even still, you could eventually find what you were looking for after going to enough stores or calling the right ads in "Toy Shop" magazine. With these new figures, there's definitely a chance of not getting what you want at all if you are not in the right place at the right time.

One thing for certain, as Nanjin has said, no one has bothered to make 1/6 Trek before [aside from the awful Playmates twelve inchers] and no one is likely to bother with it again. That's what makes it hard.

For their time Playmates did a decent job on their 12 inch line. Considering the cost was no more than $25 each, the sculpts weren't awful. Little soft yes, but a decent representation of the younger TOS crew. Now you'll spend ten times that for a single 1:6 scale. No they certainly weren't "museum quality" but they had a charm and affordable. And just like now, were the only ones then available. So I won't knock them for the effort, especially since no one else even tried. Even Art Asylum / Diamond Select.

I agree with you. My "awful" comment was mostly for the bodies. The headsculpts really aren't bad at all, even the clothes (I notice the more expensive "museum quality" Exo-6 figures in the wartime uniforms with the gray quilted shoulders use the same detailing as the Playmates figures) and accessories are decent, for the time period and price point. It's just a little odd to see a good Picard or Chekov head on a body better suited for G.I. Joe or He-Man and Uhura, Janeway, and Deanna Troi built like Xena and they are all the same height, that's all. Even the packaging displays nicely. But my main gripe about the Playmates 12 inch is no frigging Dr. Crusher! She also is the only main character missing from the "Insurrection" 9 inch line, but I digress. Looking at the Playmates line, there's a lot of the spirit of Star Trek in it.

Back on topic, if it's going to turn into a game of chance with Exo-6 going forward, honestly, I'd almost be satisfied with those old Playmates 12 inchers and be done with it. They're cheaper, easier to get (even now), and there would still be a sense of fun and enjoyment. A stress free hobby, imagine that!

What will the other “immediate release” characters be? I would very much like the Kolinar Spock but I’m getting tired of the drama and would like to rest for a while after that and preorder TWOK when they become available to do so .
My guesses:

- Cage crew

- Saavik (TWOK)
- David (TSFS)
- Spock (TVH)
- Sybok (TFF)
- Valeris (TUC)

- Moriarty (TNG)
- Lore (TNG)
- Yar (TNG)
- Guinan (TNG)
- Spock (Unification - TNG)
- Hugh (TNG)

- Rom (DS9)
- Nog (DS9)
- Leeta (DS9)
- Kai Winn (DS9)
- Damar (DS9)

I'd expect Garak and Dukat will be open orders due to popularity.

Kes (VOY)
Borg Queen (Susanna Thompson - VOY)
Captain Proton (VOY)
Buster Kinkaid (VOY)
Queen Arachnia (maybe, this would be a very complicated outfit - VOY)
Dr. Chaotica (VOY)

Degra (ENT)
Soval (ENT)
Adm. Forrest (ENT)

Thoughts for the Berman era at least

Yeah, I don’t know who most of those characters are, but I guess I see the pattern you have established. Other than Possibly Saavik they would all be an easy pass.

I dunno, I would take anxiety inducing super limited editions over unproduced prototypes every single time.

He’s not making them limited for fun, this is the only way they can financially justify making these oddball choices like Robed Spock and Bearded McCoy. If these were made in normal preorder quantities they would be collecting dust in a warehouse on deep discount.

I don’t see why you would come to that conclusion.
With preorders he can estimate the amount to produce.
He gets 100 preorders — He makes 110 figures.
He gets 1,000 preorders — He makes 1,100 figures.
+ he brings in something with the non-refundable deposit.
With immediate production and release he conceivably could overestimate or underestimate. He makes them without pre-funding.
Not to mention although he loves to tell you they are “limited” or “ultra limited” but never tells you what that number is or put numbers on the packages as is usually the custom with “limited editions”
btw for what it’s worth Cotswold Collectibles still had preorder on TMP Kirk last night. I added a twelfth to my cart which was already holding eleven. And they still continued to be available on site. ——— I don’t know what Cotswold knows about what they will actually get —- but they are not limiting cart additions.

edit: correction . They are no longer in my cart or available on site tonight

I’m no producer of sixth scale action figures for a niche audience, but I don’t think it’s that simple. He has said before that you need to hit a certain production number for each figure before turning a profit, and Trek cannot support those numbers. I can only imagine that the flipside is true, that producing in low numbers, even selling them all, would garner a compromising loss.

From what I have heard of the industry, low production numbers cost more per figure than higher production numbers. A preorder of only 100 figures would probably result in a cancelled figure.

For Enterprise I'd like one of each of the founding members of the Federation, Archer, Shran, Soval and a Tellerite. Its a long shot I know
That's my angle too! Though I'm more than content to have T'Pol rep the Vulcans, she can certainly take a lot more credit for the founding of the Federation than any other Vulcan at the time.

I wasn’t suggesting that he make only 100 figures, I guess I was merely trying to present the concept of estimating market desire and adding 10 %. ( Personally I don’t don’t know the % above preorder that a manufacturer would estimate . Maybe it’s 25 % . I dunno). The ”immediate release” w/o the preorder sampling comes up to a pure guesstimate. Yes, I agree if he only came up with a small preorder he would likely cancel the figure and the fewer headsculpts and uniforms (and bodies, if they are different) cost more to make per figure. I really can’t imagine much sales of a David Marcus figure regardless if “immediate release” or preorder.

I'm not too worried about the Spock drop. Kirk was easy to purchase on EXO-6 for many hours and continued to be available as a preorder for a few days on various other sellers' sites. Even if the quantity of Spock is half there should still be a decent window of opportunity for anyone who wants one to get in there on time. Also, if it's limited to one-per-customer then that means a better likelihood of availability for most everyone.

My concern now with Spock dropping next week is that the shipments will be locked up in the worst time of year, the late December holiday crunch, and could be weeks from delivery for some buyers. How did they not anticipate this when pushing the drop date to next week? Not everyone will be affected, but the shipping dilemma will certainly be erratic and some will experience delays depending on their country's shipping backlog. At this rate I'd have preferred for the Spock order to be pushed into January just to avoid the shipping hassle.
