I think what I sucks the most is that it’s all happening while WB is undergoing their ridiculous regime change. As such, I feel like it’s hard to gauge where their priorities are on merchandising when the optics are that David Zaslav is strip mining the entire operation for parts.
Otherwise, I’d say they should just keep doing what they’re doing and it might not be as unrealistic a prospect as it seems. They just won a WB licensor award. If they remain consistent with their output and shoot for the quality level we’re expecting, I feel like it’s only a matter of time before they can just put their cards on the table and say “hey, we value your IP. Our customer base values your IP to the point where they are regularly importing the products you approved for sale in China and we see a potentially untapped market if you’re willing to expand licensing into North America and Europe to start.”
Maybe it’s mean and catty, but if their products beat Hot Toys? I would love nothing more than to see Howard Chan lose the master license and be the small fish having to peddle his stuff in Asia. Because, honestly? I feel like they haven’t given a damn about their licensing partners at Warner Bros. since they made their in-roads with Lucasfilm and Disney/Marvel. It feels like a predictable cycle of tokenism; like they’ll fire up another Batman variant once every two to three years and a figure or two from WB’s latest blockbuster and offer it at the altar of Yakko, Wakko, and Dot to appease those mischievous Gods of the Watertower.
