You can absolutely get away with unrealism if the writing is great and convincing enough, as well as matching the rules of that world, established in that universe. Something Marvel have also forgotten with most of their recent films/tv shows.
But I think execution is just as important too. Guardians of the Galaxy will make you believe and empathise with a talking tree and racoon for crying out loud.

Dutch manages to hide his heat signature in mud, so it’s established that there are ways to mask your heat signature from the predator. I just don’t buy that she would be able to with the method they decided to go with. They set up a scene where she lands in mud has to pull herself out of it, maybe that might’ve been a more convincing way to have her realise she can also cloak herself from it??

I think the idea is that the way the hunts and fights, is supposed to be brutal and feral, however for me, this "Feral" Predator just comes across as dumb. Really really dumb. Wading into his enemies attacks sustaining all sorts of damage.
Look at the way he's defeated. Or a certain injury he suffers in that fight.
This Predator is a moron.
That along with his goofy face leaves me with the impression that he's just brain damaged.
I'd be interested to see if this gets a sequel and if it's the same director.
I'd definitely give it a watch though hopefully he'll use a normal Predator next time.

It's not just the plant's effect of hypothermia but also the lack of big movement. It's been established early on that they use the flower as a medicine that also makes the person feel cold as seen when she uses it on one of the Comanche hunters. That's an observable fact they know. Naru also has keen observation and was pointed out by scenes and his brother to be able to notice things more easily. Going to the scene with the Predator and the Frenchman, as pointed out, his eyes were wide open and his jaw can be seen twitching when the Predator was looking down on him. Naru seeing the Predator ignore frenchie made her think the possibility he wasn't seen because of the plant AND he wasn't making any big movements. This was a gamble for her and she only confirmed it when the Predator walked past her during the final confrontation. You can see her relief at that time.

It's the same with Dutch. The mud masked his heat but he wasn't making any big movements either. That's why after every attack, he was motionless or just hugging a tree.

So, she knows that body heat is even something that’s possible to be perceived because “she can notice things that others can’t.” Ooookay. Ya got me. i’m convinced, the writing was great…

True, we haven't seen a proper, well made Predator since P2.
The "classic" Predator in Predators was a decent shot at it but they didn't do a very good job with the mandibles. Every other Predator has been an ADI bodge job.
I just want to see a Stan Winston quality classic Pred one last time. P2 was a long time ago.
All these redesigns and reimaginings. We've had a Pred redesign in all 3 of the last Predator movies. Berserker, Assassin and Feral (AKA inbred). Appearing with less than stellar, not up to Winston's standard, classic Preds.

I am amazed that the genius of Stan Winston has yet to be matched let alone topped even after a whopping 32 years of technological advancements.

P2 Pred is still my favorite looking of them all, both in and out of the mask.

Prey has an awesome mask and a cool profile when unmasked but a very subpar unmasked look from the front. I do like that the director said that you can either pretend that his movie is a full reboot and that all the Preds look like that in his universe or if you want it to be a straight prequel then his Pred is "a different species from another continent on their homeworld." So that's cool but either way it still can't touch Stan Winston's design.

Nor does it match the physicality of Kevin Peter Hall. He was just so evenly balanced in the costume, this new actor looks a bit top heavy with the big mask and skinnier legs.

Yes. By logic, she's able to learn that. It's establishing traits of the character during the course of the film. She's very observant by what's presented; statements of her by others as well as actions she has taken in the film. I'm not trying to convince you of great writing. I'm pointing out facts presented in the film that support Naru's capabilities. It's up to you to see them.
 
It's hard to accept as a Predator fan but we'll never see another Predator as good as what Stan Winston and his team created.

Repeating what I've said before, it really was lighting in a bottle regarding what they achieved with the practical effects in the first two films. Combine that with KPH's amazing suit performance and what you have is IMO the most real looking creature put on film.
 
Evidence of a character being able to learn is not an explaination for how a person who might‘ve existed over 300 years ago would understand the concept of being able to see heat. The attempt the film makes for an explanation is lazy.

I would’ve much preferred her understanding of the predator’s abilities and traits to be more interpretive and influenced by her culture’s folk lore… such as the skinwalker for example. And, even if her assumptions about it are incorrect, it would add to the authenticity of her understanding and beliefs about the predator as we know it.

There is so much they could’ve explored.

People 300 years ago are capable of understanding concepts just the same as we are today, if given a reason to observe and learn. In the film we saw how she observed and learned.

It looks like they took the Pumpkin Head design, slapped some mandibles and tendrils on it and called it a day.

Agree with everything you posted here.
City Hunter is my favourite too.

Absolutely right about the way this new Predator moves. He juts his head far forward so that, on a side view, his neck looks long and his shoulders hunch over. Combined with the proportionally quite thin legs, he does look very top heavy.
Movement wise and his hunched silhouette, reminds me of the monsters from The Time Machine movie with Guy Pierce and Jeremy Irons.

Personally I'm going to go with the Predator sub-species from another continent explanation.
Though given how different they look to other Preds we've seen, I'm more inclined to see them as "cousins" to the Predstors we know, that live on a neighbouring plant to the one all the other Preds are from.
They shared a common ancestor in ancient times but now look quite distinct from each other but have some similarities, like mandibles and tendrils, as they are a group of Preds that lived on a separate but close by planet for a long time.
 
What gets me about the flower thing is that if her body heat was lowered enough to be cooler than the surrounding environment then she would be suffering from severe hypothermia and barely be able to function, let alone fight.

But, you know, sci-fi... gotta suspend your disbelief a bit.

Well, also, Arnold's mud trick would only work for about 12 seconds, at most, before his body heat dried up the mud and made him visible again.
So I'll allow the magic flower 😉
