Well we have 3 clear examples of distinct Predator species; the "classics", "Super Preds" and this new "Feral" species. Perhaps we could even consider the ones in AVP a small off shoot of the classics.
In "The Predator" we learn the Predators are tampering with their own genetics and altering themselves. Maybe the Predators have been changing themselves for a long time.
Or maybe their species have extreme adaptability and evolve far quicker than other species.
I see we were even able to find some positive in The Predator.:hi5:

It is more interesting when a design stems from something rather than just being a preference. I don't like being given everything. I enjoy the speculation. However, I also enjoy reading/hearing how the creator(s) came up with it. I wish it had more of a back story other than just my preference.

This is Trachtenberg's quote on the reasoning, which is the only thing I've seen about the design so far:

"I wanted it to be scarier than we've seen it before. It's intelligent and it has advanced technology, and that makes it even more difficult to take on. But because the movie is set 300 years in the past, those things need to feel a little bit older than we've seen before, but also still far more advanced than what we think our earthlings would be able to handle. I wanted to make sure the head was more proportional to the body. This predator is much slimmer and less armored than it's ever been. It’s more 'creature'. It's still hulking and ferocious."

Would love a figure of Naru + Dog + Predator. I've always been more of a fan of the biomask designs that the Predators have had throughout the years. Never cared too much how they looked underneath (aside from the original and wolf maybe) and that goes the same for the new one. Even the AVP Predators (Wolf, Celtic, etc) has had cool biomask designs. Really dig the unique bone/mandibles on the side look that this one had. Hope we get some figures from this movie but I highly doubt it with how Hot Toys has been with anything Predator related. It's a forgotten property for them but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I'd never display a Predator without the mask on, they look awful regardless of the movie or design. The masks make the design for me.

That’s how I am as well. The mask to me arguably is the most salient part of its design and helps make each different Predator unique being that each mask in itself tends to have its own unique characteristics.

The AvP species I recall reading were similar to the Feral in the sense they came from a different, colder/snowy region of the planet, which was why they were bulkier and had more armor to cover themselves with. As far as their actual species though, they did look more less like an off chute of the classic, just bulkier for the aforementioned reason.

I liked the AVPs, I liked the Super Predators (as mutants), but this design is just plain ugly.

Even if it doesn't make sense in the grand scheme of Predator lore, it's just an ugly design. There's not much appeal. The OG Winston Predators have that great beady-eyed relatability. The Super Predators, while totally inhuman, at least look interesting with their multi-colored ridges and skin patterns.

The Feral Predator looks like a potato exploded in a microwave. It's like they took a generic monster from a pile of unused creature concepts and added dreads to it.

I like the Prey Predator design. I can clearly see that they went for some ancestral stuff. But they luckily stayed away from the super duper mega bad Predators and legacy Predator that completely insulted the original design...

100% pure BS speculation here but I think the reason it's not in theaters because Disney doesn't care about the franchise and was just doing this out of obligation or probably lost a bet or something. I mean, on paper it already sounded terrible-- a scaled down version of a popular monster movie without any big name actors that doesn't have Nick Fury at the end to assemble the survivors nor planting any franchise-building seeds throughout the film doesn't sound like a movie that would bring in a lot of money nowadays. I think it was saved by a director who knew what he was doing.
Give this a read.

I don't think I'd buy Naru, but she would be cool to see in figure form. Hot Toys has gotten a little better at female figures in the last few years.

I’m loving all the hype and fans that’s retuned for Predator again, it feels like the franchise kinda died out after The Predator movie came out. The way Shane Black ruined the Yautja lore was so disappointing and it even turned me off quite a bit and I’ve been a huge Predator fan from day one, my first collectable was a predator figure. I’m just so happy Prey has brought the love of the franchise back. All we need now is just a whole bunch of new Predator figures to come back onto the market. I’m sooooooo glad I ordered that 1/12 Jungle Hunter Predator from Mezco now

I wouldn’t buy a Naru Hot Toys, I didn’t like her enough to spend $300. However, Sean Dabbs is making a sculpt of her now and it does look pretty darn good!

It fits the film, the aesthetic of it - a classic predator would've seemed out of place i think.
That's an interesting thought.
I definitely think the classic theme would have been out of place but I think the Pred design, the face, could have been closer to the classic look than it is.
Isn't it interesting though, that a proper classic Predator would feel out of place in a Predator movie?
