I can see why Drinker was so cynical. There are certain trends and overused tropes in Hollywood these days.
When the initial blurb we got was something about "a young girl breaking gender norms to become a hunter" people will have a reaction to that.
I have been very sceptical about this. To be fair, I've always said I'll give it a fair chance and watch it but it really needs to be well executed.
Reviews suggest it is. I'm looking forward to watching it at the weekend.
If Drinker genuinely dislikes it after watching, then fair enough to critique it.
Hopefully he'll have the integrity to praise it, if it's genuinely good amd admit he was wrong.
Though I do understand why he was cynical.
True. That was what they led with in the early marketing and it was quite an eyerolling thing to read in the context of a Predator movie of all things. Plus it came after we'd had Terminator Dark Fate highlighting much the same stuff in its own marketing and look how that turned out. It ruined T2's ending in a way that none of the prior sequels ever had, bad as they were, and what did it offer in compensation? Pretty much an identical storyline and the usual increasingly absurd chase set-pieces that can't be taken seriously as occurring in a real world with physics and human mortality. And John Connor being replaced by a girl was supposed to make all of this worthwhile like as though that was the thing that was wrong with those prior films? 'Fraid not guys.

But look, marketing missteps notwithstanding maybe they've actually pulled something off here.

I'm reading critic reviews on RT and barely any of them talk about the actual movie itself. All the praise is about how stunning and brave the cast is.

I just realized that the main chick played the scientist guy's alter ego on legion. I was racking my brain trying to think of where I saw her before.

It's up on hulu already. Can't decide if I wanna watch it now or wait til tomorrow.

Wel, I went ahead and watched it.

It was decent. It's a very simple story which is basically just a set up to see the predator kill stuff in creative ways.

I do hope they release an unrated cut or something because they shied away from showing many of the kills by either cutting away or showing things obscured or out of focus. There's still plenty of blood and gore though, it just seemed like they had to cut some stuff for an R rating.

The predator itself was cool but there was no consistency with how strong or agile he was from scene to scene. He was super badass when they needed him to be and then a fumbling buffoon as well when the plot called for it.
