You know.... I've never seen the original Top Gun.
I generally love cheesy 80's movies but not sure going back and watching one of them for the first time now will be bearable.
No idea why I never watched Top Gun. I watched all the cheesy 80's action movies when they first came out.
Anyway, trailer for this looks alright but never having watched the first one, not sure I'm fussed about seeing this.
Top Gun is a classic. And although, normally, the Cold War idea of russia being dark masked baddies seemed old fashioned up till a few months ago, it’s seeming a bit more on the money now, lol. It’s full of cheese and 80’s bravado. But it’s worth a watch.
Put it on, switch off your brain and let us know what you thought of it.

I got myself a new subwoofer, and tested it out watching Top Gun. I know this soundtrack is one of the best of all time, but it's been such a long time since I've heard it, or watched the movie, and it really does bring a smile to one's face, listening to these jams again.

I got a kick out of watching the credits, seeing that Giorgio Moroder produced nearly all the songs in the movie. No wonder it's so good. That dude was the king of that synthesizer sound.

Top gun still stands up well and is very watchable. Cheesy and cliched no doubt, but fun.

It's probably the only one I didn't watch on VHS in the 80's.
I'll give it a go. Thanks both.

For me there has only been one franchise that has been brought back after a huge passing of time that has been done really, really well; Cobra Kai (another honourable mention would be Reitman's Ghostbusters). But Cobra Kai has been the pinnacle; it respects the old, while making it fresh and relevant again with the new young characters. The creators intimately know and understand their source material to the point of minor lines in the original series now having new perspectives and greater meaning and resonance...

After today I'm adding Maverick to that same level.

If you like the old one (you don't even have to love it), it delivers on every front. I went in with mild expectations, so to say it wildly exceeded those expectations would be an understatement. It ain't Shakespeare, but it doesn't have to be, it's just a GREAT summer blockbuster with a ton of heart, action, and a story that makes sense and effortlessly continues Maverick's journey.

And to add to the happiness, it's a huge middle finger to modern Hollywood films that are completely driven by metrics and/or agendas.

Can't wait for more people to see it so the conversation can begin.

Loved the new movie! Without spoiling it, there was one line he said about 10 mins in, that properly choked me up. It is surprisingly emotional throughout. If you like the original, you will love it.

Reminds me a lot of Blade Runner 2049, in that it wasn't necessary, but the tone and feel is spot on, and embraces everything that was amazing about the original, serving as a fantastic tribute and sequel

Just back from the cinema and I have to say this is a really great movie. The first one is a classic but putting the nostalgia aside, the second one is the better movie. I agree with Mandible and generalszabo it has its choke up moments and a lot of goosebump moments if you liked the original. The way they pay tribute to the original is pure class and how they included Ice and gave Val a chance to reprise his role was great and just worked perfectly, at least for me. The action sequences and sound effects (I highly recommend Dolby Atmos) are top notch, as expected.

Tom Cruise delivers, as always, it is hard to not like this guy as an actor. And wow, in some shots with those aviators on he seemed as young as in the original.

Loved this. Got tickets to an advanced screening that gave away some swag. I took my dad. Very predictable action movie in that you can guess how things will happen, but I didn't care. Action sequences were top notch and this was just entertaining as hell! Cruise continues to churn out worthy action movies.

That's the best compliment anyone can say because it doesn't need to "subvert" the audiences expectations (which seems to be the big Hollywood thing at the moment), but instead meet or exceed them - even if it's predictable.

We all walked out of the cinema completely satisfied and on a high.

Exactly, we knew how things would probably turn out, but in a strange way it made the build up and anticipation even more exciting.

Just got home from the cinema and god damn, I’m in awe of this movie! Tom Cruise has pulled off damn near a miracle, absolutely phenomenal. I’d probably go back to the cinema two of three more times to see this. It’s not often I’ve been completely satisfied by a movie, especially a sequel, but this one does it. As far as sequels goes, this for me is on the level of ESB or Aliens.
