Meanwhile...

Does Owen know that Anakin fell to the Dark Side, and that he is Darth Vader? Or does he think, like 99% of the rest of the galaxy, that Anakin was killed during Order 66 and the following Jedi Purge?

I've always wondered this with lines like;

"There's too much of his Father in him."... "That's what I'm afraid of."

and now

"When the time comes he must be trained."... "Like you trained his Father?"

Do we think that Owen was one of the very select few who knew the truth?

I don't think that ^ was ever in question.
I imagine Ben told him who the kid he was turning over to him was, and why.

Although the "certain point of view" way of thinking about Anakin v what became Vader, was probably encouraged.

Yup, Owen didn't get a good impression of Anakin from their time together in AOTC, and the jab about training Anakin could simply be reference to the fact that Obi-Wan had to hide Anakin's child, the Galaxy is going to hell and Obi-Wan is now Ben in hiding. It's as much an anti-Jedi/Obi-Wan comment as it is specific reference to what went on between Obi-Wan and Anakin. Owen just wants to be a farmer and lead a simple life.

I think the "Like you trained his Father?" line suggests that maybe he knows at least that something "went wrong" with Anakin specifically, rather than ag eneralisation of what happened to the Jedi. That's my line of thought anyway.

EDIT. Although that would suggest that Obi-Wan and Owen know that Anakin survived Mustafar and Darth Vader lives, which I don't believe they do at this point. So perhaps it is more of a dig at the Jedi in general, "look how the Jedi ended up"

I think by this time, everyone knows that Anakin turned to the Empire and betrayed the Jedi and executed as many as he could before Obi-Wan "killed" him. Perhaps that's the reference -- Anakin's betrayal.

Understood, everyone knew he turned to evil but believe he died on Mustafar. So the fact that Darth Vader still exists is not necessarily known. Looking forward to the moment when Obi-Wan realises he still lives.

Knowing modern Disney they'll probably say that they were secretly partners/lovers; hence their "intense" emotional relationship.

Nothing would surprise me these days...
Well it does get kinda boring in those foxholes...

Isn't Darth Vader feared throughout the galaxy? I just don't think anyone realizes -- like we didn't in ANH in 1977 -- that Darth Vader, evil Dark Lord of the Empire, is actually Anakin Skywalker. I think that is a guarded secret.

If you take the story that Ben tells Luke about his father and the traitorous Darth Vader, who was a pupil of his, then I think you begin to understand the wider story that has been passed down through the galaxy: Darth Vader betrayed and murdered Anakin, and helped the Empire destroy all the other Jedi.

Therefore, Owen does have additional knowledge that most people don't -- knowing that Anakin was a troubled soul and dangerous Jedi that turned on Ben -- and perhaps even he knows that Vader is in fact Anakin underneath (or maybe this show allows them to learn that).

Oh yeah of course! Darty Vader is known throughout the galaxy, but only a select few actually know who he is because he is hidden behind armour. Pretty much how it was in ANH.

It's actually simple. I made it more difficult than it needed to be, sorry!

I've always assumed Owen and Beru knew that Anakin is Vader. Even if that wasn't always Lucas's plan, the performances of the actors conveniently suggested as much in the dinner scene (or breakfast, whatever it was) in A New Hope - just like Alec Guinness's acting in the scene at Ben's house suggested he was hiding the truth from Luke - even though Alec wouldn't have known Lucas's exact plan (because Lucas himself didn't know yet).

As far as this show it hadn't dawned on me the idea that Obi-wan does not yet know that Anakin survived Mustafar. And I got the impression from the dialogue we've heard from Owen that he - at the very least at this point - knows Anakin turned to the darkside. Does he know that he is Vader? Has he heard of Vader? Less certain.

Yes, it will interesting what the show chooses to establish.

My gut fears we just put more thought into it than the writer's room did though.
