I saw them say that about the eyes and nose too though and then they rushed to release this prototype without apparently fixing those issues. I still think overall the figure is very good but the face still bothers me. I just don't really see Ian McKellen which is disappointing but they've done just enough with everything else to convince me to PO.
Yeah I understand about the likeness. Some angles I don’t see it, others I do. And I don’t know why that is.
But I still PO’d it as I like LotR

How can you say you don't see Ian McKellen? I know that perception varies from individual to individual, eye of the beholder, and all that stuff... But come on!

You may say that they didn't nail it perfectly, but it's not like the sculpt looks like Meryl Streep!

Honestly I mostly see some old guy cosplaying as Gandalf the Grey. It is what it is. If you see Ian McKellen that's cool.

Different eyes see different things. No fault in that. Like for me, people swear by the MJ Indy sculpt being the best or one of the best and ever since someone pointed out how it looks like former President George Bush I can't unsee it.

Yeah, the beard bothers me a lot too. I saw this same thing on many Asmus pieces, Gandalf never had a bushy beard. Hope InArt will fix that.

I can’t pay $515 for a face that isn’t perfect. I love everything else, just don’t understand why they messed up the nose and mouth.
And the eyes...
What is "messed up"?

I don’t like the InArt rooted beard. It looks too poofy and frizzy rather than like strands.

I think it depends on what reference they are using in this case it seems they are using the hobbit images as reference. But your actually not wrong it should be a bit more straight.

@Spiln3r not in term of the realism. Because the figure really looks like a real human being.

Ok, "messed up" is maybe exaggerated. But likeness is not only defined by realism. It's also about facial expressions, characteristics and also imperfections.

I found a similar picture to show you what I mean.

One of the characteristics of Gandalf is, that he likes to squint his eyes a bit, which makes him thoughtful, sad, concerned and also kind of angry.

So while not as realisitc as Inart, I think Asmus captured that expression quite nicely in their prototype.

I think what bothers me the most is that Inart created an idealized Gandalf.

Hey, maybe just think of Harold and Kumar‘s W if that helps a little.

I think that’s one of the greatest errors of the Asmus version; they made his beard exactly the same as his head hair- long, flowing, white lockes of hair and it seems to be warping perceptions of what the beard actually looks like.

Yes, it can look quite cool to have the greasy, wavey strands look but that effect should be exclusive to his head hair.

The beard should certainly be a little less bushy/full than IA have it and it should be more whispy and come to a point at the ends but, overall, they’ve got the frizz aspect and textural differences between the head and beard correct.

I honestly think the INART sculpt looks more like Ian with the reference used there than Asmus's prototype. :dunno But agree to disagree I guess.

The mouth and nose can be better on INARTs for sure but it looking so lifelike really helps push it in my opinion. Asmus has the nose and mouth right but then it looks a bit cartoonish/stylized on its own because of the lack in realism and detail. They each have their pros and con but I lean towards Inarts for now. Maybe they'll make slight adjustments until production comes around. Quite impressed with it as it is though. It's also sad seeing the Asmus prototype knowing what the production version ended up looking like. :monkey2

Agreed, the Asmus Gandalf beard looks unnatural because they used the same hair on the entire sculpt, beards are frizzy, bushy and wild when they're long and facial hair is a completely different texture from head hair too, the only problem with the beard on the QS/IA prototype for me is that it's not as groomed as it should be but I think it does look very realistic, question is will the final product live up to the prototype? Only time will tell.

Many people have already pointed out the bridge of the nose is too narrow and the mouth is too small. As someone posted above they even admitted the prototype was rushed and acknowledged some of the imperfections. At this price point everyone is allowed to be critical or voice their concerns.

I agree with most of your points but to be fair we need all the reference pics to have the same angle of the face. Facial features can change a lot based on lighting, angles and positions.

Preordened. Too many years waiting for this. I never expected to have LOTR figures with this quality to be honest. Last years just wanted that a company like Hot Toys did something like that and finally it's happening. For me it's a dream come true to have LOTR in 1/6 with this quality.

I hope Queen Studios do a great job with production pieces!
