Testing out an alumaluster paint job. Started with the back plate, and am comparing it to an unpainted chest piece, trying to get the right tone. It’s very challenging with a reflective surface like this, as the brightness is changing based on everything around it and lighting. But I’m getting close. Gonna 2k clear coat it next to see what kind of shift in reflectivity it causes. Compared to the original chest piece the backplate pops
I think.

After tediously prepping all the armor pieces with primer, glossing, sanding, polishing, I’m finally at the painting stage with Alumaluster. I’m using one of my Mando helmets by Jsin Props as a sort of brightness/opacity template, since the alumaluster should only be applied 70-80% opaque for a screen accurate look. I’m going just a tad brighter to make up for the lack of strong set lighting they use to light the armor during filming, otherwise the armor comes off a tad too dark offscreen.

Looks great!!!! How I wish I had the paint skill to do this. Yours is going to look insane when it’s completed

Looks spectacular! Can't wait to see how it looks when finished.

I'm finally getting invoiced for mine from KGHobby next week.

Finally finished my HT 1:4 Mando armor repaint this week. So I'm gonna bomb this post with pics for you. I used the same Alumaluster paint and application techniques they used on the screen used counterparts. I'm well chuffed with the result. It was a lot of trial and error on practice spoons to get the tone and reflectivity just where it needs to be. Also added in all the silver highlights on the ears/helmet and mudhorn signet. Plus some fun heat bluing to the jetpack thrusters. Then a final coat of automotive 2k clear coat to protect the finish and I'm calling it a day. I may go in and add some weathering at some point, but I want to enjoy it clean for a while first.

HT may eventually rerelease this 1/4 fig down the road, and maybe even add some mysteriously absent accessories (i.e. Darksaber and Beskar spear). But they'll likely never use Alumaluster, as it's unbelievably expensive, so I think this work will still hold it's own down the line. Plus, since HT made all the armor modular and removeable, I may even be able to just velcro it right onto a rerelease.

I don't see why HT can't do that. This and their first 1/6 Beskar Mando are too flat and their new chrome one is way too shiny.

Yeah, first they just used gray paint with a ton of gloss. And their upcoming deluxe is chrome, which is also not accurate, as it's simply too reflective. But, in fairness to them, it's really hard to replicate the look of Alumaluster. That's why it's sort of the gold standard and so pricey. But it's only a 4oz bottle needed to do this armor repaint, so it was reasonable. But for HT, I can't see them wanting to spend that kind of money for mass producing, not to mention the extremely labor intensive prep needed for this particular paint.

Could you give us a run down on what you had to do to achieve this? Prep, etc. Even just a link if you have one. It would be greatly appreciated!

Sure thing.

Painting this armor is no different in any way than painting full size 1:1 Beskar/Mando armor. And there are scores of how-to's on Youtube with really thorough walk through's. Here's a summary...

1. Gently sand all the armor pieces with a fine grit sandpaper, like a 3000 grit. to remove any surface texture from the weathering applied by Hot Toys. You don't need to remove the weathering entirely, just any surface texture so you can get a smooth finish.

2. Tape off any places you don't want paint, such as the connection socket in the helmet, or the pegs for the forearm swappable rockets. Once you layer on all the paint and clear coats, it becomes thick enough that it may hinder all the friction fit elements. So you want to protect those connection points, plus they're not visible anyways, so no need to paint them.

3. Airbrush on several coats of black primer. Let it cure for several days, then lightly sand it with 3000 grit just to rid any bumps or texture left by the paint.

4. Airbrush on a 2k Clear Coat (I used SMS 2k Clear Diamond). Let it cure for a full week. Then wetsand and polish until you get a super smooth mirror like finish.

5. Now it's time for Alumaluster. Airbrush on aiming for about 70% opacity. That's what gives the armor it's darker steel/aluminum look. Now for the highlights (on the ears, rear helmet vent, mudhorn signet) apply it to 100% opaque. Let it cure for several days.

6. Time for the final coat of 2k Clear Coat to seal it all down and protect that metallic finish.

7. Weather as you like (I chose to keep my clean for now) with oil paints, like raw umber or burnt sienna.

Wow! That’s badass and definitely how I’d love to have my 1/4 Mando look. Hell it’d be my favorite figure in the collection. How much you want to do mine? Lol.

To be honest I think I prefer the ‘before’ version. I can’t be totally sure from the photo though, would you mind painting it back to the original form and take some pics in better lighting please so we can make a final decision.

Oh man it was a labor of love for real. Took weeks to get it all done, nervously hoping not to damage anything on a $650 figure. Don’t think I’d want to do that again, lol. But I’ll gladly share tips and methods.

Thanks for the run down! I'm seriously considering it but I don't want to ruin a piece this expensive.

You did an amazing job, sounds like you really know what you're doing, congrats on a one of a kind figure 😀

Due to the collector crisis caused by the new battery safety law in Australia, Popcultcha currently can’t locally sell figures that takes batteries. Prices have been reduced significantly.

I don’t want to feel like it’s taking advantage of this massive headache for retailers and collectors there, but I’m posting this because I think Popcultcha would be happier to have these cleared out of their inventory.

It’s one of my favorite stores and they’ve always been very kind and helpful to me. I wish there was a better way to support them other than buying figures they want gone, but I guess this is all we can really do. There are other figures and statues that have been heavily reduced as well (search by “Int Sales Only”).

Even with shipping to the US, you are still saving about $200. I don’t think there’ll ever be a better deal than that.
