Personally speaking, I still believe PayPal is a reasonably safe and secure way to pay for goods when it utilized properly by buyers and not abused due to greed/stupidity.

However, for sellers I believe it's significantly more perilous due to the abuse caused by greed/stupidity of buyers.

The preceding is why I don't use PayPal to accept payment if and when I sell anything. Moreover, due to preceding is why I don't sell anything actively on eBay.

If and when I choose to sell anything, it'll be in person for cash or the buyer and I make specific arrangements to protect the buyer and myself to ensure the transaction completes properly.

Integrity and trust is fraught with issues nowadays not just between an individual buyer and seller, but also with businesses/vendors online as evident in a number discussions lately about certain vendors in China/Hong Kong ranging from taking advantage of the 180 days claim time limit for PayPal, lack of timely communications, no acknowledgment of refunds, and price gouging shipping after the fact.

Stop using Friends and Family payments. I refuse to do so for this very reason. People want an extra 5% on top of some stupid cost for a figure. If you want it that bad add the extra percent and pay for goods and services. Friends and family payments should go for exactly what it refers to and not some fool you don’t know who has something you want. Good luck!

I agree with everything said above. I'm not advocating that anyone use Friends & Family when submitting payment to a stranger.

I do however, take exception to statements implying buyers are trying to game the system using Friends & Family. Often, buyers gladly offer to pay more through G&S to secure assurance that the transaction is covered by PayPal. It is often refused, and while this is clearly a red flag, it is (was) not always an indication of fraud.

What is also clear is that PayPal fraud is at an all-time high. If any PayPal user, myself included, has grown accustomed to many past successful F&F transactions, those days are over.

Don't get me wrong I've gotten amazing deals from all of y'all too! But the combination of an unreal price and F&F or zelle only...recipe for disaster! Not trying to insult anyone and I do hope it turns out alright. Hopefully he's done but it does serve as a reminder to always be careful, good luck!

both my PP cases were closed with no refunds. I also called PP and weren't able to refund me any money due to the payments being F&F. The woman told me to file a Police report, but I have no suspects.

I been using the internet since the late 90s and all the times I lost money, had issues with sellers and buyers were from Ebay which and once from Amazon. Early 2000s on Ebay is when I lost some money, later on with buyer protection with Ebay and PP, any issues my money was refunded.
But this is my first time losing money from using a message board and I done 1000s of transactions in the past 22years on message boards.

And I have found many amazing deals using F&F, just a few months ago, I spent lots of money using F&F. And I also have found many amazing deals using G&S
Will I stop using F&F, no, but I will be more cautious

But that $500 does sting a lot. Maybe I'll get lucky and randomly find a bag filled with money totaling $500.

You Sir, are an educator. Helping the inexperienced learn what NOT to do.
Keep up the good work.

As far as I'm aware, people use F&F for Paypal as the sellers have to pay fees if it's done the other way. I think that's stupid myself as whatever the cost of what you're buying is ought to cover the cost of any fees. I will always do it G&S as that's precisely what you are paying for. If the seller gets funny over paltry fees, walk away. People may refer to eBay as 'Evilbay', but, the Paypal system there is always G&S and you will get your money back.

Funny that people would essentially contact Pay Pal and ADMIT to them that they abused their policies surrounding the use of F&F, basically admitting that they cheated Pay Pal out of their transaction fees and somehow expect Pay Pal to help them.
It’s actually bizarre!
Almost as bizarre as seeing a DX11 listed for $200 with ONLY F&F as a payment option refusing to even allow the buyer to pay the fees, and somehow expecting that DX11 to actually show up.
That $200 wasn’t stolen…it was donated.
Sorry.
