Nocturnal Animals - 7/10
It was a good, but not a fun watch. The film is bleak, gloomy and generally unsettling. You really have to be in the mood for this. Not sure I had the right mood yesterday, otherwise my score might have been 1 point higher. Maybe upon a next viewing, although I'm not watching it again anytime soon.
Great performances by Gyllenhaal, Shannon and Adams. The suspense in the beginning, when Amy Adams starts reading the novel is extremely well done. You really hope the events aren't going to turn out like you think they'll will.

Snake Eyes
6/10 - as a generic action movie pretending it wasn't Snake Eyes
2/10 - as a Snake Eyes origin movie as it was nothing like the source material

Knives Out - 8/10
First time I saw this. An excellent murder mystery with great characters and acting. It looked like Daniel Craig had a blast playing this role. A very well excecuted film.

Mortal Kombat (2021) - 3/10
I think it started out ok with Hiroyuki Sanada, but when we get to meet the main characters it all turns to crap with some terrible acting and effects. Also the story was completely dumb.

Do people just use this thread now for Tv? There are a couple of threads but they haven’t been used for years.
I’ve been going through the original Star Trek box set, there are probably episodes here I have never seen, not a hard core Trekkie but I do love it. I had to share this lol.

BTW the alien in the background, I was the whole time going I know you I know you - it’s Ted Cassidy wearing a fancy petticoat.

Episode 1.7 (aired order) What Are Little Girls Made Of
Not one of the best episodes but it was decent. 7/10

Just went to see Return of the Jedi with a live orchestra so that was a 9.5/10 experience, -0.5 points for missing the best part of Ewok Celebration.

Venom 2 - 5/10

I actually like the Brock/Venom dynamic but this film itself was weak. Carnage was highly underwhelming. I expected more than a finale centering around.....a wedding?

The Tomorrow War - 5/10

We do love coming up with enemies that are almost impervious to machine guns. I can't help but find it annoying and frustrating to watch though. In Predator the creature was skilled at evading gunfire for the most part and you just bought that he could do that. It was clearly necessary for him to evade being shot however since he was shot in the leg and had to perform painful surgery on himself. Even in establishing this vulnerability of the central threat the film managed to be tense as ***k. Then later came Shane Black's The Predator and the creature had become a videogame boss character who the heroes could shoot to ***t and it wouldn't die until....eventually, for some reason, it did - like as though its energy bar had finally been worn down. Just boring.

Christmas Movie watching begins!

Home Alone : 7.8/10. Its really showing it age and era now. Some really funny parts in it now, and a decent pull of the heartstring secondary story.

The issue is , people think this movie is good because of the “fun house” segment. But thats barley 20 minutes of the film, What makes this good are the OTHER moments everyone glosses over. Basically any scene NOT involving the robbers ….

Gremlins: 8.7/10 Seriously….this movie still works. The effects still hold up after all this time Walas did some serious movie magic in this one.
What I didnt realize was all the direct callouts to other films….I read an old review of it and the reviews called it “pandering” to other older films…

so I made a list of the refernces I saw.

1. Indiana Jones
2. Its a wonderul life
3. Invasion of thw body Snatchers
4. Alien
5. Mad Max
6. E.T.
7. Lost in Space.
8. The Time Machine
9. War of the Worlds.
10. Snow White
11. Looney Tunes
12. Casablanca
13. Star Wars
14. Psycho:Halloween
15. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

What other films do you guys think they were referencing to in that film?

I saw Gremlins for the first time in a long time last year and enjoyed the hell out of it, as well.

Maniac Cop: 7.5/10

Very solid 80s horror movie, but nothing all that special. Gets bonus points for having an all-star, B-movie line-up including Bruce Campbell, Robert Z'Dar, screenwriter Larry Coen (writer/director of the Stuff, It's Alive, and Q the Winged Serpent), and director William Lustig (director of. . .Maniac!). Pretty fun movie.

Dead and Buried: 7/10

Also. . .very solid 80s horror movie, but nothing all that special. It does a good job of building up suspense regarding the mystery of the town at the center of the film, and the killings are often horrifying. However, the ending was a bit of a let-down, and frankly doesn't even make sense :lol but
with a cheesy horror movie that's not a prerequisite.

The Rise of Skywalker - 6.5/10
The second time I saw it since seeing it in the cinema, back when it came out. For some reason I think I let all the hate and negativity over this film take effect on me. I know I quite enjoyed it seeing it in theatres in 2019, but after that I kind of developed a hate for it, purely based on comments, reactions and Youtube videos and that's just not fair. I really felt like watching it again yesterday and so I did. I enjoyed it. It's definitely not a perfect film and there were some questionable decisions made regarding Force powers and whatnot, but overall I had a good time watching it. Things I expected to bother me a lot based on said comments and Youtube vids (like the horsecharge on the Star Destroyer for example) weren't a big deal for me actually. Glad I gave it another chance.

I’m a huge Joe Dante fan, he always puts in references in his films. Like in The Howling he named a lot of the characters after people who had directed werewolf movies. A couple more in Gremlins from memory are:
* The scene where the dad is calling home has cameos from Robbie the Robot from Forbidden Planet plus Steven Spielberg and I think Jerry Goldsmith the composer as well
* The Gremlins do some Flashdance style dancing in the bar
* The movies playing at the cinema at the start are A Boy’s Life (the working title for ET) and Watch The Skies (the working title for Close Encounters)
* from memory there are a couple of nods to The Howling but I can’t remember where, I will have to watch it again!

Maniac Cop 2: 8.5/10

In terms of B-horror and action movies, it doesn't get much better. Performances, effects, stunt work, tension, so good in so many ways. There is a runaway car scene early on that is amazing, and at the end, a really long scene with a guy on fire running (well, walking) around and kicking ass that is equally great.

Train to Busan: 8/10

Great suspense and drama, as well as action and gore. Really emotionally wrenching ending. Unfortunately, I bet they will try to remake this for the western world with Chris Pratt or some such, and that would suck.

The Suicide Squad - 8/10

Had so much fun with this. Can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. Gunn playing to his strengths with lovable freaks, ultra violence and a pitch perfect cast.
HT really dropped the ball in only doing King Shark. So many opportunities!

Black Widow…..4/10
Fell asleep…..twice.
Poor mans female Bond film….

Just a mess of a film.

The Last Duel - 7/10
Interesting film. Not for everyone, I'd say. Certainly not Ridley's best, but a good watch nonetheless. Not being familiar with the story or the outcome of the duel, made that part of the film extremely exciting.

I watched it last weekend. Would give it a 7/10 too. Well acted and the story structure was well executed - especially seeing the same scene from a different point of view.
