Yeah I guess I give it a pass too but I think it's part of a wider Disney SW problem where everyone/thing gets redeemed, made relatable/sympathetic or elevated regardless of who or what they represent (even a Rancor has feelings too!)
Like OW should have been cornered on Tatooine and a droid appears from nowhere and it's actual R5D4 who saves OW by.... overcoming his bad motivator!
I mean it's fan service-y but at the same time it's just... I'm not sure what box to put it in.Like... why Owen exactly, a gruff "**** your dreams and get back to your chores, chump" grouch who has to get BBQ'ed in ANH to let the journey begin?
It's like the perfect diva-Snipes Blade + MJ mash-up... winds it up then EXPLODES!Or shot...

I've had the same thoughts here. I'm no sword expert, but anyone who's done any sort of sword play with their dads would know twirling around is a good way to get stabbed in the back.
I think the PT duels completely go over some of the older generations’ head which I think is partly to do with growing up with the OT but also partly to do with not having an actual understanding of the actual lightsaber lore of Star Wars.
If you actually do research into all of the lightsaber forms that each Jedi studied and mastered, it’s not just over-choreographed ‘twirling’; it’s an actual dance, so to speak, where both force users can see one another’s next move which results in them reacting accordingly.
The heavy-handed, sluggish movements of Disney Star Wars/the OT are just flat out visually unappealing when it comes down to it and I truly think you’re clinging on to nostalgia to say they look better than anything from the PT/TCW.
Take the Battle of Heroes for example, these are two Jedi that are absolute MASTERS of their respective forms; one offensive, one defensive, who have both trained together for countless hours. Of course there’s going to be a flourish to their fight because they can not only literally see the future due to their force powers but also because of their mastery of lightsaber combat.
I’m sorry but it’s such a narrow-minded, ignorant copout to criticise the much more enjoyable to watch, visually impressive, polished duels of the Prequel era because you think it’s too ‘twirly’..
Yes, I've heard that but it comes more of a retcon of what the OT has shown because they wanted the saber fights in PT to be more impressive to watch. George originally intended the lightsabers to be really heavy:

Both of them have trained together for years. Both of them are Jedi force wielders and duelists at their absolute peak, at no point again in Star Wars lore are either of them equal to this duel.
The Jedi and Sith have got near-perfect reflexes and due to foresight, they can essentially see their opponent’s next move. This results in these ‘feints’ happening. In this case neither are falling for each other’s feint. It’s as much a mind duel as it is a lightsaber one, basically a game of chicken for the force sensitive.
Obi-Wan used Form IV (Soresu), which was an extremely defensive form. (He changed from his initial aggresive form after seeing Qui-Gon lose to Maul in TPM) You essentially wear your opponent down to exhaustion by defending every attack perfectly. Obi-Wan was considered the absolute master of this form which is why he was such an incredible duelist. Obviously this shot here depicts his defensive style, attempting to wear Anakin down with this feint. Them training together for so many years obviously resulted in them knowing the other’s style of fighting perfectly which is why Anakin can see the feint and mirrors him.
I think the greatest depiction of Obi-Wan’s mastery of Form IV was in TCW when Savage and Maul corner him and he absolutely merk’s them both. Go watch that on YT if you’ve not seen it yet. It gives a great example of his knowledge of Soresu.
Well of course he got over it quickly - he was busy fantasizing about hooking up with the hot chick from the message stored in that R2 unit and having her polish his shiny new lightsaber.
Hokey religions and ancient weapons...you know the rest.
A couple things after watching the first two episodes again:
1. I found the production value to be surprisingly solid. Tatooine, Alderaan, that one Tokyo type planet, all very impressive to me. So I guess they burned through their budget for those first couple episodes, lol.
2. Not only did Obi-Wan's daily life parallel that of Rey in TFA but wow they really seemed to go out of their way to sync his interaction with that other fleeing Jedi to Luke and Rey in TLJ. He comes to the remote hiding master for help, the master says something to the effect of "the Jedi Order are no more" which of course disappoints his would be apprentice. Of course the main difference between the new apprentice and Rey is that the new guy ends up leaving and getting killed.
3. Reva asking Owen if he thinks he could protect his family from her certainly has new meaning now.
4. Ewan is just great in every scene and I'm still amazed how good a job they did casting young Leia.
5. You see C-3PO front and center on Alderaan for that one quick second but I hadn't realized that R2 appears briefly in the background as well. IIRC it was the scene where Bail goes to tell his wife that Leia is missing.
As I continue through the rest of the series I'm anticipating that really only eps 4 and 5 are where it gets goofy so with 1-3 being solid and 6 being hit out of the park I'm not gonna let two silly episodes negate the whole series for me. As we've said a hundred times SW is almost always a mixed bag but the important thing is that this show delivered where it mattered most.

Counter: Being told to research extensive lore in order to appreciate the excessively twirly choreography, and explain why it is actually not silly to look at is an insane request.
They're laser sword fights. It's fine to like whatever ones you like but it ridiculous to claim those who don't are being narrow-minded or ignorant. The gif above says it well enough. Laughing at that is reasonable.

I’m not telling you to “research extensive lore” to understand it. I’m simply explaining that’s the reason it’s the way it is. If you’re a fan of Star Wars that ‘research’ becomes a joy and a hobby. I think the older crowd fell in love with the OT for an entirely different reason than my generation who fell in love with the PT. That stuff doesn’t seem to be interesting or worthwhile to you. Completely fair enough and I respect the sentiment.
Nonetheless, I was just stating the reason behind it.

Honestly it has to be a generational thing and for me personally I don’t find the rebels vs stormtrooper and flying space ship fights interesting. Idk. What got me hooked was the jedi lore and the pt lightsaber duels . The clones and the droids fighting each other and so on. I respect the ot and it is done better but rots will forever remain my all time fav Star Wars film. Thought this would be blasphemy to say like 5 years ago but I’m seeing that movie rank on the top 5 greatest Star Wars movies of all time and more and more people keep saying the same thing as I am.
Oh, get off your high horse - is there any "fact" these days that isn't really just an opinion?
Historians will call this period - thanks to social media - the "my opinion is fact" era.
