It is unfortunate the outer layer (coat) has the most inaccuracies:
  • It's understandable they wouldn't get the texture with the 'holes', but the material choice should have been more of a vinyl/faux-leather.
  • Color should be blue-grey, not brown-grey.
  • Buttons look too small and are missing from the cuffs.
  • Trim around the buttons goes up at an angle.
  • The inner lining is completely missing - it should be visible at the cuffs and lapels.
Curious if the 'cut' of the coat is correct in the back...

The only problem with this figure that he looks so similar to Jack Sparrow, but with a different head and hat.

When this was announced my initial thought was that they'd put a different head and hat on a Jack Sparrow style outfit, because they look so similar in style and colour.

Then looking at source images - I don't know what film this Barbossa represents - I noticed the missing buttons on the cuffs straight away.

I have two DX06s and a DX15, primarily because they're impressive looking outfits rather than any real love for the films.

Therefore, in the cold light of day, since Barbossa looks so similar he's not appealing enough to order. A more impressive costume and I'd be more tempted.

I don't know that vinyl or pleather would've been close. The film costume looks like it's got some sort of satin finish and that, combined with the perforations, reminds me of gym shorts (albeit with a nicer, slightly puffier texture). Maybe a breathable mesh fabric would've worked. That stuff isn't expensive either.

Yea, when looking up the costume, the jacket doesn't look like leather or vinyl. Just some sort of textured cloth fabric. Maybe it was waxed to help with water so it might have looked vinyl-like in some scenes?

At the end of the day, it's still a really nice piece and definitely a nice starting point for anyone who's pretty good with modding/customizing.

The jacket is easy to replace if we can find the fabric I could probably get coats done for around $50. Just great to have a base figure without paying 1.5k +.

Also you can grab apple's on ebay for $7 or so. Really excited for this regardless of how inaccurate it is.

I completely agree - is this figure perfect? No, but to quote a recent episode of succession "the man dying of thirst is now a mineral water critic?".
ANY halfway decent Barbossa figure in 1/6 is close to a miracle for those of us who have been waiting for any version of him AT ALL for years and years.

Over time we might be able to kitbash or order custom (for those in the financial situation to afford to do so) the odd piece here and there that could do with a little upgrade, but at least we have the character in our collection without having to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars/pounds to have each and every little part of (a pretty intricate) costume, plus the sculpt, made by custom artists.
So for the most of us that is a HUGE win in of itself.

As for the outer coat there are definitely some inaccuracies, ChibiSchmoo definately has noted a few of them, though I will disagree and say that this coat (at least to my eyes) is more blue-grey than than brown-grey. In my opinion the colour of the jacket seems accurate when you look at it in the movie's better lit scenes.
I also have to disagree with the choice of vinyl or faux leather for the coat, it seems more of a fabric in most pictures, scenes and prop images to me.
As has been said the most notable inaccuracy is the lack of pinhole mesh texturing on the material.

That aside though... this is actually pretty accurate in terms of the clothing etc all seem to be pretty much spot on to my eye! (YMMV)

The head sculpt is certainly an idealized Geoffrey Rush, but at least it is DEFINITELY Geoffrey Rush. I agree that a smirking, smiling, more evil sort of expression would elevate it even more - but I'm happy that this 3rd party offering at least 100% looks like the person and character it is meant to be.

I'm just so excited to finally own a 1/6 figure of this character after so long, and the fact that the figure itself is pretty damn decent to my eyes is even more exciting!!
Its figures like this (and the Immortan Joe just announced) that keep me in this hobby!

To my eye it looks like the lining of Barbossa's coat is made from a thicker, heavier material than the top layer with the finer meshing texture.
It also seems from the prop details that the coat's top fabric layer is synthetic in nature, probably something like a kind of mesh polyester similar to what sporting clothing (usually men's shorts) are made from, which would account for how it seems to wrinkle atop of its own lining material and the slight shine it has.

I'm thinking its something like this Airtex mesh on top of a more heavy draping material which provides the structure while also providing a backing for the pinhole-mesh to prevent the coat being see through.

What do you guys think??

The PropStore auction listing from where that top image originates specifies that it is a synthetic material. There are a few close-up images, showing that it's got a pretty interesting texture to it.

This other listing has many other close-ups of the full costume, but ye be warned, it makes the figure look downright crappy by comparison.

I think you're correct about the material. Here's a closeup from that same prop auction:

I guess in thinking about this, my brain is stuck in what pirates would have actually had to work with. Obviously not synthetics. What this reminded me of is ostrich leather - where you get these evenly spaced 'bumps' from the feathers in just such a pattern; though they would have been cut out to create the holes.

So are the spots on the coat holes or (I don't know the proper term) little stitched bumps/buttons to give the surface a tufted look?

The latter would make much more sense for the time period, but still tough to reproduce in a smaller scale.

Maybe this with a fabric underneath would work right?

What fabric is that maybe could get a tailoring todo a test.

They are indeed raised "tufts" -- not holes like mesh.

The close-ups above should have clarified that.

Some friends and I spent a lot of time about 10 years ago searching for a suitable fabric for a custom but could not find anything that would work. Ostrich 'bumps' are too widely spread to work in 1/6th. I feel like there should be something similar that could work but, like I said, we couldn't find it.

I can't believe how many of you are nitpicking at the fine details of a figure that we've been waiting on for ten years. Who gives a **** if it's not 100% screen accurate. You're talking about holes and bumps and blue grey versus brown grey or whatever the hell it was.

WHO CARES.

There's a Barbossa figure coming. Don't be 40 Year Old Virgin style nerds. Be happy this is finally going to be in your collection.

Good grief.

I don't think anyone was really nitpicking or complaining, except for maybe the initial poster who pointed out the inaccuracies compared to the real screen coat. The rest of us have been more or less analyzing the screen coat for ideas on a potential custom coat to be made further down the line. Many, if not most of us have agreed that this is very nice set as is, especially for the price, regardless of any inaccuracies.

Looks good enough for me. Sure it’s not perfect, but for an unlicensed figure under $200 it’ll do. Just not sure about the company, and also trying to decide between this and Kingpin.
