Creating Fennec Shand

Fennec Shand’s look and personality were inspired by her name. To create the character, Ming-Na researched on the fennec fox and how it behaves, modeling her character’s personality after it. She speaks slowly, with a slight drag, and odd pauses in between - showing how the character is always thinking.

“She’s tricky, and yet she’s able to maneuver and survive, and be stealthy—so very graceful and agile. I just love that whole image with the name.

- Ming-Na Wen, Vanity Fair, 2019

Joseph Porro, costume designer, played with the fennec fox’s colour - orange, adding orange features to Fennec’s primarily black outfit, paired with her sleek half orange, half grey helmet.

For her hairstyle, Ming-Na and hairstylist, Maria Sandoval wanted to create a unique look for Fennec. Being an elite assassin with a helmet, Ming-Na had an idea of adapting the fennec fox features into Fennec’s look. Maria then came up with an intricate braiding system with a long tail, and orange cords woven into it, resembling the fox’s ear - creating the beautiful and unique Fennec Shand look we love. But the process of braiding her hair is not easy at all - when filming Season 2 of the Mandalorian, Ming-Na shared she usually goes home with the braids, hiding it under a baseball hat and sleeping in it, just to cut down the time needed to create her look.

“But we thought it was only going to be one episode, so we wanted to make Fennec memorable. When she came back, we were stuck with it. Oops.”

- Ming-Na Wen, starwars.com, 2020

Hmmmm. I think it looks better in black, myself.

Name a more iconic moment than Fett and Fennec getting comfy on the podium there; I'll wait. Vader screaming NOOOO? Kenobi saying These are not the droids you're looking for....? I think it will be right up there.
Agreed the black is much better.

Fennec is heavily inspired by Zam assasin in AOTC IMO.

They should have incorporated the ears somewhere, somehow. Fennec Fox reminds me of the crystal foxes from Crait lol.

Good point, and just as with Zam, her relationship to the bounty hunter in question is itself in question. What exactly is goin' on there...? Nobody knows.

Sure wish HT would give us Zam, now that Jango is on the horizon. They'd make a very sweet pair. She does have a complicated costume, but so do many others HT has tackled effortlessly.

Hoping this will go up for order and not be just a proto

I’d like a headsculpt as well, but will take it either way most likely.

gunna be hard for her to have that drink with the helmet on tho

Come to think of it, I thought it a bit silly on the battle of Tython when Fennec took off her helmet and threw it away. I would presume one would want as much protection one can get when being shot at lol But I think she may have done it to have better visibility(?).

That and Din forgetting about his jetpack were definitely two of the most bone-headed things I noticed this season but people usually tell me to just “shut off my brain”:lol

Of all the things Boba could have demanded Din put down, it's the jetpack. Now I know being aerial would give him even more of an advantage but wouldn't Boba want to negotiate with Din after dropping his blaster? Or whistling birds? Or any number of weapons?
I guess the writer just wanted to make sure Din couldn't get to Grogu quickly when the Dark Troopers showed up.

Yeah when I saw him and Fennec running toward the stone temple I thought, "Call for your jetpack!" :lol

It probably helps having that narrow view with a long range weapon from a distance, but it’s probably not ideal at close range when a group of enemies are closing in on you.

She doesn’t have to worry about being shot, she’s got plot armour :lecture

True :lol Though Mando's plot armor feels more plausible (i.e. beskar armor)

I did. But did not RSVPed. I can get informed sooner in this forum.

Did anyone else get the RSVP email for when she goes live? I already put in my notification.
I RSVP or wishlist things I want now on SS. Makes me wonder if it helps SS analytically with anything. I see this figure selling relatively well.
