I suppose bases will always be similar when they're based on a specific scene. But I do think this one is infinitely better than the one on Sideshow's PF. It's more pleasing on the eye, and I like that they went with more height rather than width. I don't think I'll actually buy this, just because prices these days mean that I have to choose which few statues I can buy on occasion more carefully, And Aliens/Predators are my priority. But I really do like it a lot. If I were big on LOTR, I wouldn't hesitate.

It's not really based on a scene though, the movie sequence was the battle and there wouldn't be bare bones already. For such an already tall figure, I actually prefer a shorter wider base. I am having a hard time deciding if I want to get this as I already have the PF. I was hoping these were going to end up 1/3 to make the decision a bit easier.

Yeah, it?s damn big. I wouldn?t get much else from the line. Not until I get a bigger place. But maybe not even then. Just want a mouth of Sauron.

The 'face' is pretty bad. Looks like one of those horse or bull carved skulls. Guess its because they made the eyes part of the side spikes, instead of being sunk behind them.

Yeah I?ve never noticed the eyes before but yeah, I like the eye better on the real version. Looks more evil and slightly animalistic, like you tell there is a monster in there and not a man.

But I?m guessing they pieced the mask together in creating it.

Well that's true. I do much prefer this one, but if I already had the SSC version (which is also really good!) I wouldn't buy this one also. But then I'm not a huge LOTR fan. I have the SWS Predator and still bought the Prime 1 version also so I guess there is room for bigger LOTR fans to have both of these should they wish.

Sideshow got it right, and also WETA, which is a bit smaller. I was considering this piece, but think I will pass and just stick with the WETA. When looking at it, I can't 'unsee' this, it looks a bit silly to me, like if he is wearing a mask and not a layered, menacing helm.

If you have issues with this, put it too them on their FB group where they will see it and may even potentially act given enough pressure. Feel free to do it all here also of course, I'd be interested in seeing comparison pics to show all of the criticisms anyway. I can do it all day long with Aliens & Predators, but Sauron isn't my area of expertise....

Yeah? :lol
Sideshow :lol and this one :lol are both :lol from the same :lol team :lol

Keep hoping :lol :lol :lol

I don't really understand your reply, but yes Weta are the artists who worked on the film and they made the statue around the same time. Sideshow distributed their statue, which is why they were known as Sideshow/Weta at the time.

I'll explain my reply - I felt your reply was condescending, thus my emoticons:
I know what weta, Sideshow, etc do. I was talking about the Sideshow premium format. That piece had a correct looking helmet ( although the body proportions are questionable ). This piece is from the same team that made the premium format, which shows that even if they did it right the first time, it doesn't prevent them from messing it up.

It wasn't condescending, I was only light-heartedly commenting on your post and actually agreeing with you, though I wasn't sure if you knew about Weta's involvement in movie making as not every collector is and I don't know you personally so didn't want to presume.

No problem :)
Anyway, I do want to love this piece, but looking at the helm, and the opera singer pose, I'm sort of loving my Weta piece more and more. Don't think it this one will make a better replacement :(

I agree, but then 1/4 scale pieces have never really appealed to me, they're too big and I find just as much detail in the 1/6 stuff. I've got a big collection of those which I just wouldn't have the space for if they were 1/4. I'm sure Weta will one day do a Sauron Master Collection, and I expect that to be the most sought after, but even then I think I would stick to the SSW one I already have. Because any MC statue will be massive and far too expensive! Plus it's special to me to have the statue that was made by Weta at the time they were working on the films.

Now THIS is a proper Sauron statue and a worthy upgrade on the old but excellent Weta one that was made way back in the day.

I remember when the later sideshow PF came out, I was complaining heaps about the dorky pose. I never liked the Jerry vandestilt painting inspired pose. Looked really awkward. Heaps of people defended it prior to release but to my eye it still looks kinda unnatural.

But this statue on the other hand has a proper power pose.

Very interested!

It's very similar to the Weta one in terms of pose, just a bit more... as you say, power pose. I'll stick to the one made by the film-makers
Especially as it'll cost a lot more! Plus I'm sure Weta will do a Master Collection version someday.
